Apologies if this isn't the right place to be asking but on the Victrix 12mm US Infantry sprue there's a fella carrying two ammo cans, are these supposed to be .30 cans or something else?

They look to be too big for .30cal ammo cans? But not sure what they are? Cases for mortar ammo?

Too big for .30. Maybe the M9 Large .50 ammo can.

I own a ton of the original stuff, and I am not sure I 'think' they 'might' be the first model 60mm ammo boxes, but they are not really correct for those. But as it seems the figures are all M1919 MG crews, that's probably not what they were going for. But the tripod carrier is also not really correct either as you carry the M1917 tripod that way, but not the much lighter weight M1919 tripod.

That large .50 cal box is not a WW2 item.

I came back to add that a 60mm mortar round ammo can is a possibility, but they are not right for that, either.

I feel a little better being so confused by it now! I was going to use them for the M1919 crews but they just don't look right considering they also have the gunner carrying the correct sized ammo can

Could they be boxes? They look to have a hinge that would open the large side.

Maybe something like this?

Possibly? I don't know how often .30 teams were lugging ammunition in boxes like this though

I have a feeling that they are more UK cases than US issue. Wouldn't be the first time a sculptor mixed & matched equipment… ;-)

MiniaturesWithBeef29 Jan 2025 7:09 p.m. PST

That had crossed my mind too, maybe I'll just headcanon that these guys put a bunch of .30 belts in British crates to move them around after the beach landings!

I think the easiest solution would be to paint the mystery cases a different color from the regular ammo cans. That way they can be whatever you want… ;-)
