You haven't said why Armati has captured your imagination so there is not much work with.

When my group returned to Ancients we decided we did not want go back to WRG. Neither did DBM appeal to us since we didn't really enjoy DBA. So we began casting about for a new set. We looked at Might of Arms and Armati. Armati has nice features and its command and control seemed to better reflect how ancient armies fought. We ultimately found the system boring and too rigid and moved on to other sets eventually settling on Impetus.

Impetus is really the next generation of Armati gaming. What I liked about Impetus is that it accomplished many of the same design goals of Armati but in positive manner rather than creating rigid rules. So for instance, there are good reasons in Impetus to move in groups rather than as single units but this is done through bonuses rather than rigid command restrictions.

A couple of years ago we moved from Impetus to Sword and Spear primarily because we found the combat system in Impetus too dice based. It had become like playing Yatze.

From an Ancients point of view our club has largely moved on from Armati to To the Strongest. Three was quite a number of players who travelled to Armati tournaments, and indeed organised them in Glasgow. One or two may still go to the tournaments. Reasons for stopping were pretty much as Marcus Brutus said – too limiting.

I've played Armati,Impetus and To the Strongest. As mentioned above, Armati was an improvement over DBA, but for playability, my group as switched to To the Strongest. It's use of a grid overcomes the need for lots of rules around movement, turning, etc.
