Our group is working hard to prepare for our demo Show game in July. After tweaking the rules ('Victory without Quarter') to better suit big battles, we're going to have a manageable practice game tomorrow. I've decided to ref the game & I've set up parts of my two armies for a fictional battle.
The forces of the English crown under King Charles, face a Covenanter army under Archibald Campbell, latterly Duke of Argyll.

The battlefield:

Seizing & holding the ford will be the objective.

Dunoon Fort has been besieged by the Sassenachs (English)

The English royalists:

"Galloper" cavalry is King Charles' elite.

A battaglia of solid P&S regiments

Another battaglia but this time including dragoons & commanded shot

The Covenanters:

A battaglia of I suspect indifferent mounted troops

Levin's elite _ Scots lancers & cuirassiers.

A mixed command of Forlorn Hope, Scots' Highlanders & Dragoons

Doughty Covenanter Pike & shot regiments.

Looking good.

It always amuses me that Archibald Campbell's memorial is almost exactly opposite Montrose's memorial in St Giles High Kirk, Edinburgh. I picture their statues hurling insults at one another across the cathedral aisles in the middle of the night.

Thank you.
Yes, civil wars are not very civil.

"I picture their statues hurling insults at one another across the cathedral aisles in the middle of the night."

Well, yes. But they'd be doing it in clear and memorable English, itself requiring substantial cultural memory to understand. You'll not hear that sort of invective in modern television interviews, nor even in any of Britain's parliaments.

Even worse in DC, sadly. All those "Political Science" majors should be set to remember or invent ten insults a week. If they can't rule us competently, they could at least be entertaining about it.

"clear and memorable English"? Ye've gane quite gyte awthegither.

I doubt it. Both would be probably speaking Lallans – Lowland Scots- which apart from the "accent" is/was interlarded with Gaelic, transformed English & a Scottish "creole". Both gentlemen would also know Gaelic. Feumaidh tu a bhith às mo chiall.

So – dinna ye fash yersel, Laddie. Tisna within yer ken.

I speak the modern version of Lallans. My birth language. I have no idea if *I* could understand the C17th version. I very much doubt if you could.

Game over.
The Covenanters consolidated their left flank with their P&S regiments that rebuffed every English attack:

The English Royalists tried an audacious concentration of their Horse that attempted to whip around the Scottish right flank. A move deserving of the brave prince who led it – Rupert.

Tenacious Covenanter defence not only held off the English but routed several vaunted Cavalier units & killing Prince Rupert. Puddle, his dog, survived.

The tweaked rules worked, the gang played well & confidently & fun was had.

Oh, I'd have to read it in translation, Ochoin. I never doubted that. But there'd be something TO translate, and not the usual political mush. Naming no names, but there are abundant politicians in the English-speaking world today, who can spend half an hour or more boring you to tears without fact, insight or commitment. Not even a memorable insult.

And I shall long treasure the anonymous denizen of Edinburgh, who when Montrose was attempting to speak called out "Jamie, Jamie, wull ye no be contint until ye be raised up above the multitude--on five fathom of rope?"

Sometimes when transcribing contemporary Scots documents you have to try and say it out loud to tune your ear in. A bit like some of Irvine Welsh's dialogue, but without the swearing

I think your view, RP, of history smacks of the Romantic.
I would think it more accurate to view the factions of the Scottish side of the ECW as similar to the razor gangs of Glasgow from the 1920s to the '60s.
Brutal & violent – and their leaders eg Argyll & Montrose, had blood stained hands from several massacres. "Gentlemen" by nomenclature not by deed or word.

I PM'd you ochoin. Getting too close to the political firewall.

Nice looking battle. I should have said that earlier.

WW – The Pine Rivers Model Train & Hobby Show. In July. In Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Indicate you'll come & you get to be Prince Rupert, commanding all the Royalist Horse.

Alternately, work out how much airfares are & offer your best wishes.
