Having read the excellent book on Quatre Bras by Field, which is written largely from the French perspective, I was looking to obtain a copy of Mike Robinson's book on the same battle, but have been put off by the reviews that criticise it for being purely from the Allied perspective. At the same time, I gather that it does at least use ALLIED sources (which is what I am specifically looking for), rather than just British ones.

Has anyone on here read it, and does it contain many (if any) references to the Brunswick contingent?

Thanks.

I have the Kindle version and just counted about 40 pages in the bibliography. I scanned the titles rather quickly as I went and I would say about half (somewhat less I think) of his sources were other than English writers. I read the book awhile ago and was pleasantly surprised to see all the quotes from the other contingents. There are references to the Brunswickers and I was impressed by one Brunswick hussar in particular.

Field's book was written as a response to Robinson's. Together, they make a great account.

I find no fault with Robinson for limiting his thesis and sources to match. Also very glad Field took up the challenge of the other view. As he noted, digging out the info on a war that France rapidly wanted to forget was a challenge all in itself.

I found Robinson's book very good. It is a bit cumbersome in some places. I kept getting annoyed with him reciting The Prince of Oranges full title every time he mentions him. Once is enough and then refer to him as the Prince of Orange from that point on.

But overall it was a good read. He is upfront about writing it from the Allies point of view and I appreciated that. I am looking forward to reading Fields book.
