I'm working on the flags for my Austrian army. According to Kronoskaf, in 1743 a green pattern was introduced. And then in 1745, that was changed to the yellow pattern. However, in 1756 few regiments had the yellow pattern as they had to purchase them. The yellow pattern subsequently was purchased as the old flags wore out/captured, etc.

Duffy, in The Army of Maria Theresa, talks about few regiments purchasing the green banners and most had the yellow flags.

I've also seen various references to the green flags as "Hungarian" flags for the Hungarian units.

How are most handling the split of yellow vs green flags in their armies?

I stick to the yellow flags (in part because I am too cheap and lazy to change any out)

Two of my Hungarian regiments, raised between 1741 and 1746 (Haller and Bethlen) that I've painted in the 1756 version of their uniforms, got the green Ordinärfahne, as that was more likely to be what they carried.

In reality, nobody can be confident about what regiment had what at any particular time- unless there's paperwork stating something like "IR Frankenfurter ordered three new Ordinärfahnen on 01 April 1756 and received them on 23 October 1756". Flags replaced because they were lost or destroyed in action would probably be quickly replaced. An inhaber with his eye on the bottom line may find a lot of excuses why he can't replace a flag just because the Inspector General told him to replace it.

Like Dal Gavan, my Hungarian battalions have the green Ordinärfahne.
However, not all my German battalions carry the yellow standard, but
a few retain flags of an earlier period.

The Austrians didn't care enough to be current with their flags. Therefore, I'm not real particular. The regiment gets whatever I grab first out of the pile. WOO-HOO! Problem solved.

Thanks everyone for their input. I'm going to do a mix based on this.

While on the subject of flags, my buddy suggested I apply 2-3 coats of superglue to the flag poles. (Of course, let the superglue dry between coats). It really does stiffen them up. Works great on my 6 and 10mm figure units. Of course, apply the paper flags afterwards.
