So, who has played it and what do you think of it

Does it offer a heroic experience where mighty feats of arms may be performed by great warriors? Can Hector duel with Patroclus or Ajax or Achilles. Do Spartans fight to the death to protect the body of their dead king?

Can Pyrrhus cut down the Marentine Champion in Sicily. Do unarmoured Roman Tribunes who offer themselves as sacrifices inspire fear in the hearts of their foes?

Or, are heroes just dispensers of Pips?

You win – or at least keep fighting – if your army is inspired by the heroic deeds of their leaders. You can certainly have single combat. Fighting over the body of a dead hero is not included but would fit in to unit combat mechanisms which include push and shove.
Leaders have mighty deeds, but never enough, so choosing where and how to use them is important.
A game turn that includes two rounds of melee (after both attacker and defender movement) but one round of shooting tells you what else matters in the game.

have mighty deeds,

that interests me, are there any examples you can give?

Looks interesting I considered it and may yet pick up a copy. I am forever late to the party though.

Hardly late, it came out at the end of last year. A hero has typically 1-3 mighty deeds per turn. They can be used to help pass a Command Test, aid combat, help pass a risk to heroes test (at a cost to your reputation) or use special abilities (which are often a one-off game effect).
