Shad, congrats to the Canadian team. I only watched pieces of the game, not a hockey fan. But a tough overtime game. Who leaves a teams best player open in front of the goal? Oh yes, My Cleveland Browns. 😔 I was proud of the crowd, very little booing during the Canadian National Anthem. Pretty good restraint from Bostonians who had been drinking. Someone must have given them non alcoholic Sam Adams. 😉 Yes I caught the "revised" words she sang in the NA. 😉 Congrats Bostonians and other US fans for singing our anthem. Players played their hearts out. Ok, now we take Curling from Canada!! Than Maple Syrup!!! 😂 |

Too much snow and then mosquitoes in summer. At least in the woods of Ontario. Saw them carry off a fully grown grizzly. 😉 |

Oh, and don't forget to bring a good parka. It's been consistently -10 to -20 C here this month and -30 +/- on the prairies where I grew up – actually north of there in boreal forest country. It ain't the mosquitos you need worry about. It's the black flies! They won't carry you off, they'll gnaw you to the bone right where you stand…or fall. And you all think Canucks are soft. It's all deception. |

Brings me back to my youth, 35thOVI. Playing in the muskeg to see who can get through without getting soaked…or worse. LoL As for mosquitos, I first discovered you could build up a tolerance to their bites when I saw my dad working outside at dusk – just covered in mosquitos. He said they didn't bother him. So, yes, you can build up immunity to the itching but it takes hundreds to thousands of bites – and you need to do some re-building every season. But there's no immunity to that one mosquito in the night that buzzes and buzzes and buzzes…LoL Anyway, mosquitos and black flies are part of our homeland defence. You should never venture into the woods when their doing their reserve training. Oh…and our General Winter is every bit as bad as the Russian one. It's something we have in common with the Russians. |

That and your coastal waters. Kayaking in Nova Scotia is a great lesson in how much current there can be in apparently still water. The eastern coasts of Canada are one big trap set for the incautious weekend sailor. Rocks, reefs and shoals were as much a part of the defenses of Halifax as the citadel. |

Shad, nothing I hated worse when camping in half shelters when doing civil war living histories with my wool blanket and poncho, was bloody mosquitoes humming around my head. Ok I hated incessant rain and temps just above freezing more, all at the same time. Soaked wool and teeth chattering cold. And I was doing it for fun? At least with the cold only, you could sleep by a fire and roast on one side and freeze on the other at the same time. Until your bloody wool socks start to catch fire (yes it happened once) 😉 |

The POTUS is just poking the Canadians. And trying to influence them to shut down their border to illegal alien crossing into the US. As he did with Mexico. Regardless, I think to both US neighbors Trump wants them to stop making things any worse than the total mess the former POTUS and his minions left the US borders. With those ridiculous open border policies. Which in the long run behind the door was not really for humanitarian reasons. But it sounds good and many believed. Just like when Mayorkas and the past VP kept saying the border was closed and they had it under control. Which was an out and out lie. But many believed them. Resulting all of US citizens blood on their hands. Plus enormous amounts of US$ wasted. |

Frankly, I suspect a lot of his issue was specific to Trudeau. I think if Poilievre gets a majority, he's going to find himself dealing with Expansive Genial Trump rather than Hostile Trump. |
shadoe01 | 22 Feb 2025 1:21 p.m. PST |
@Nine pound round and @Legion 4, I think I disagree with both of you, but we shall see…perhaps its several factors all mixed together. But.. It's not much to do with Trudeau. Trudeau's been on the way out for maybe a year. The only one that didn't know it was, Trudeau. He just managed to quell a revolt in his party caucus last summer but by Christmas it was clear even to Trudeau. Plus Trump's not let up since Trudeau announced his resignation just after New Years. If anything Trump's talk has put a Poilievre majority – or even a minority – government in jeopardy, but we'll see. As for the borders, it's crept up on both sides in the last couple of years. Here's a link to the US Customs and Border Protection website where you apply all sorts of filters. CBP Stats on Border Encounters Border Patrol encounters (i.e., between Ports of Entry / POE) went from about 2,238 in 2022 to 23,721 in 2024. Encounters at POE went from 107,297 in 2022 to 175,208 in 2024. Near as I can determine both the US and CA have each had about 1,500 personnel as border surveillance and patrol (i.e., between POE). The difference is that the US Border Patrol has nearly 20,000 with 90% on the SW border, so the US can redeploy to the north. Canada doesn't have the flexibility. Anyway, it's an issue recognized in Canada last summer..this is a CBC article, so not friendly to the right.. CBC News Report on Border Issues So, it's an issue that been a somewhat rapidly evolving one – criminals, eh? They're so adaptive, but it's one certainly been recognized by our security people. What do I think it's about? 35thOVI is partly right. I think it's half about the Arctic. The other half is about critical materials. Canada is a significant suppliers of some of them and likely there's more to be discovered – like discovering diamonds in the NWT. Here's the DoE evaluation of critical materials for energy: US DoE Article on Critical Materials Note that potash is in the lowest risk quadrant, but Canada supplies about 90% of the potash consumed (not imported) by the US. I'm seeing a rhyme here with Ukraine and critical materials. Just my thoughts… P.S. This has folks up here – across the political spectrum – really angry. Angrier than I've ever seen people here. We recognize that the current government has spent 10 years ignoring "need to do" things but emotions here are beyond that. When I say folks are angry, I'm not talking about typical social media 'hairs on fire' stuff or typical journalistic drivel, but people like Conrad Black suggesting Canada be on a 'trade war footing' and well reasoned articles by business leaders that I'm getting on LinkedIn via a friend who's a retired, very senior, RCMP officer. |

I think I disagree with both of you, but we shall see…perhaps its several factors all mixed together. Yes … we shall see. But again with only one month in. There are may factors that may change. And yes we know most illegal aliens come across the US Southern border. BUT we can't disregard our Northern border. I think some things Trump done I don't agree with. But we don't know what is really going behind the curtain. And never will most likely. |

There is truly some unprecedented anger against the US there, according to some news reports. And yes we know most illegal aliens come across the US Southern border. BUT we can't disregard our Northern border. The CBC article I linked is a good and balanced one. It points out a key issue being an overwhelmed POE screening capability due to a disastrous immigration policy. That's an apolitical statement since even the government finally admitted the problem. Anyway, given the length of the border, effective security will need some 'shaping of the battlefield' and effective screening would help a lot. Praise God! We can feel safe driving I75 South to Florida again. 😅Sorry Shad, couldn't resist. 😉 No worries. We've never been attracted to the snowbird lifestyle. |

Interesting…Peter Navarro has suggested to Trump that Canada is booted from the 5-Eyes group. I'm not sure how not sharing intel helps with either border security or the Arctic. I suppose intel from the Canadian Forces Station in Alert can still be passed via NORAD, but how long before some 'bright' Whitehouse advisor suggests dissolving NORAD? Weird. Financial Post Article |
Legion 4 | 25 Feb 2025 2:00 p.m. PST |
It points out a key issue being an overwhelmed POE screening capability due to a disastrous immigration policy. Yes the Biden, his admin, the former VP and many Dems, etc. open border policy has been more than a disaster. For the US population for many reasons. Resulting in many US deaths due Chinese supplied drugs, murder, rape, etc. from cartel, gang members, criminals, etc. That use the majority of the illegal aliens as cover and exploit them, including human trafficking, etc. As well as the hundreds of terrorists, enemy agents, etc. crossing the border. There is a lot of blood on the hands of Biden et al. Anyway, given the length of the border, effective security will need some 'shaping of the battlefield' and effective screening would help a lot. The current admin is doing what it said it would do. Basically, shut down the border, continue to build the wall and add other obstacles and barriers to deter and channelize illegal aliens into awaiting LEOs and US Military's hands. Most are deported. Some turned around, some not allowed in when they get to the border, by LEOs, the military, etc., plus some are leaving the US on their own, etc. ICE, DHS and DOJ, along with other Feds, local and state LEOs are rounding up illegal aliens that known criminals. Many sent to Gitmo. At least for holding until they get sent away to where they came from, etc. As well as any illegal aliens that they find during raids, traffic stops, etc. The Border Czar again said all illegals are on the list. As they broke US Law, regardless of what the last POTUS, et al said. Even though some state and local gov't officials are fighting the Fed Gov't upholding Federal laws. Sooner or later some mayor or even governor will be arrested by Fed LEOs, and "perp walked" out to an awaiting cop car, sent to jail then court, etc. Being martyred for their misguided cause, etc. Of course, they will be back on the street before the ink is dry on the paperwork. The US has even sent Active Duty US Army and USMC down to the border. Along with state NG, etc. The border is and will continue to be under control based on US Fed law. The US knows how to shut down a border or coastline. When on Active Duty I/we were deployed to the Korean DMZ and before that the Panamanian coastline. "They shall not pass." … Of course, the minefields along the DMZ helped … Maybe some minefields along the US Southern border would be a good idea too. The #1 priority of a Republic is to protect its citizens. The last POTUS, et al failed miserably. Too bad they could not be charged with "gross lack …" … but how long before some 'bright' Whitehouse advisor suggests dissolving NORAD? Weird. Don't think so … NORAD assets deployed along the US and Canadian border is at the shortest range for Russian and Chinese to hit the North America. As well as NORAD generally tracks pretty much everything in the atmosphere and near space. E.g. : Russian, PRC, N/Korean, Iranian, etc. missiles and aircraft. Along with the orbital assets/satellites. And let there be no doubt some of those orbital assets are mostly likely armed or are H/K satellites. As well as recon … No, the war over North America's air space in and above the atmosphere is not over. The USA even created a new military unit to enhance this mission … the US Space Force. |
shadoe01 | 25 Feb 2025 3:01 p.m. PST |
When I mentioned dissolving NORAD I meant as a bi-national command and not the US getting rid of continental US air defence (I.e., the US ejecting Canada). Also, as a ‘bright' idea of only an advisor. I note that Peter Navarro has denied the story which at least means the idea hasn't support. |
Legion 4 | 25 Feb 2025 8:18 p.m. PST |
Again, I hardly think the US will dissolve it decades long joint effort with Canada. To protect North America from Russian and Chicom missiles that continue to be a threat. Also, as a ‘bright' idea of only an advisor. Well based on my training and experience briefing superior officers. I was only a CPT. A long, long time ago. Listing 4 Courses of Action[COA] for a plan, ops, etc. was standard. Sometimes it was clear some of the COA listed were probably not the best choices. At times one or two of those listed would be the obvious choices. But it is standard to look at a number of options. So may be the "bright" idea of an advisor, was probably not the only option. Of course, that was a long, long time ago. I'd imagine AI and high-tech would certainly be used as well … |

You really should watch this episode: 🙂 Subject: South Park – Canada's Strike Song | It's Canada Day. Show some respect. | By Comedy Central | Facebook link Plot: "Mr. Mackey informs the students that it is Canada Appreciation Day and plays a video in which Stephen Abootman, President of the World Canadian Bureau (initialism: WGA),[2] asks the students to remember all of Canada's contributions to the world. The students mock both the video and the country, a reaction shared by much of the world; in response, Abootman declares that all of Canada will go on strike. At a meeting of world leaders, Abootman's announcement of the strike is met with general puzzlement as to exactly what Canada wants. He demands money from the Internet, but storms out when the other delegates try to explain that they cannot simply give money to Canada. Kyle's adopted Canadian brother Ike begins to picket outside the family home in South Park, but Kyle's friends are too busy watching Terrance and Phillip to pay attention to his concerns. Realizing that the show has gone into reruns due to the strike, they call Abootman in an attempt to persuade him to end it. They agree that Canada deserves more money, but have none of their own to give. The boys form a plan to raise money from the Internet by recording and posting a video of Butters singing Samwell's song "What What (In the Butt)".[3] After the video goes viral, they visit the Colorado Department of Internet Money to claim their earnings, but must wait their turn behind several other Internet sensations, consisting of Tay Zonday, Afro Ninja, Tai Shan the Sneezing Panda, Laughing Baby, Dramatic Chipmunk, Chris Crocker, Tron Guy, the Star Wars Kid, and Numa Numa. A violent argument breaks out over who is the most famous, leading most of the other applicants to kill one another while leaving the boys unharmed. They receive 10 million "theoretical dollars," printed on transparent plastic cheques with no monetary value. The strike continues, resulting in the deaths of many Canadians from starvation and the United States' decision to bring in Danish people to fill their positions. Abootman maintains his resolve, questioning the loyalty of Terrance and Phillip when they voice doubts about his strategy and rejecting the boys' offer of the theoretical dollars as worthless. Seeing that Abootman wants to feel as if he has won something, Kyle persuades the other world leaders to give Canada a consolation prize, which turns out to be a supply of bubble gum and Bennigan's coupons. With the strike now ended, the boys return home and Kyle comments on the challenges that content creators face in using the Internet as a source of revenue. During a celebration party thrown by Abootman, Terrance and Phillip, who just did some calculating, reveal that by not working during the strike the Canadian public lost $10.4 USD million, while the coupons and the gum have a total value of roughly $3,008. USD Infuriated over Abootman's inept handling of the situation, the Canadians set him and his staff adrift on an ice floe." |

Freeland and others in her party are only serious in using the "US is a threat" to play on emotions to win voter support And for what? All to avoid 1) actually helping with cross border crackdowns on drug trafficking and illegal immigration 'cause after Trudeau's announcements on this he did NOTHING, and 2) fair trade reciprocity -- if you look at Canada's tariff schedule from 2024 some US dairy products have a 242% tariff, many other US food products have a 25% tariff. So why not be a good neighbor and negotiate a fairer tariff schedule? But then when people have gotten used to taking advantage of you, they get really angry when you stand up for yourself. |
SBminisguy | 31 Mar 2025 8:40 a.m. PST |
Looks like Liberal Party inaction on drug enforcement costs Canada 5,000 deaths a year from Fentanyl and Opiate overdoses. IF adjusted to a US population rate, that would be 50,000 deaths a year in relative impact. Why won't Trudeau and now Carney's Party crackdown, especially since the US designation of these cartels as terrorists opens up new law enforcement tools. Unless…there's too much money in it, eh? TD Bank has been discovered to handle Chinese and Cartel-linked accounts, lots of cash involved. If the Liberal party designated the Chinese Mafia and Cartels as terrorists, as the US is doing, then TD Bank would be a terrorism financier and subject to law enforcement action. And who wants that? link
