And well-made rye (black) bread is tastier than white))) Of course, I'm not talking about baked goods.

My father fought the Russians and from time to time he was lucky to get their rations: sacks full of piece of brown bread, barrels filled with lard and crates with vodka bottles.

C 2, that was a great photo. The chefs are even wearing white coats.

My grandfather met ‘em at Linz, and while he didn't comment on the rations per se, he told me that they had (and were eager to trade) that element of the diet that the GI of 1945 missed most: booze.

Not having much in the way of ready cash, they evolved a barter system very rapidly: the Russians had vodka to trade, but the item they wanted most was something you'll never believe- Mickey Mouse watches. So somebody took a jeep back to the mobile PX, bought up every Mickey Mouse watch they could find, and the 11th Armored Division celebrated VE Day with an amply supply of vodka.

Or so I heard.

Front 100 grams – alcohol during the Great Patriotic War:

I would add that vodka was given out after the battle, not before, since drunk soldiers would have suffered more losses. Usually, alcohol was given out for dinner.

And they could tell when it was dinner time on their nice new Mickey Mouse watches.
