Hi all, painting up 1944 German volksgrenadiers. Some are carrying ammo case as well as a tube on their back which I think is for holding the spare barrel for the MG-42.

Any suggestions on color for that tube ideally in Vallejo MC (non-airbrush)?

thanks, Dan

Wade Krawczyk'S German Army Uniforms of World War II in Colour Photograph, Windrow & Greene 1995 has a photo of a reenactor on page 101 carrying a spare barrel carrier (Laufschuter 42) – I'd go for Olive Grey (092) for the tube and US Olive Drab (093) for the sling.

here are a couple for which have been sold link and link which both look wrong to me

Metal personal equipment was generally painted RAL6006, ie Field Grey. Although obviously there were exceptions in eg the desert (tan) and water bottle cups (black or tan).

By 1944 a lot of German equipment was being produced with the ‘yellow' finish, see the link below to FJM44's reference section there are several MG Barrel cases with original finishes, grey, tan and even the three tone camouflage (the camo paints were supplied to units at the front so it's not inconceivable the colours were widely used), unfortunately not all have manufacture dates but I would say go grey, yellow or even camo…

Indeed. Some of my late war MG teams have dunkelgelb barrel carriers.
