I was recently reading about a distant cousin, Warren H Lessord, who at age 20 was accidentally shot onboard a ship in the US Navy in 1951. He was a seaman, and the weapon was a carbine. He was taken to a French Naval Hospital, where he died 5 days later of uremia. (Suggesting he was wounded in the kidneys/bladder?) I couldn't find much else in the way of details. The obituary mentioned the family had not been given any details. |

The military doesn't like to talk about service members killed due to stupidity and/or training accidents. |

Listed on the Korean War memorial: link Newspaper obituaries say he was shot on ship. The memorial listing says "France, the US Navy on shore duty in Cherbourg" |

It's going to take some serious sleuthing to find out any details. You may have to go to Cherbourg and read through microfiche of 1951 newspapers. |
