I was recently reading about a distant cousin, Warren H Lessord, who at age 20 was accidentally shot onboard a ship in the US Navy in 1951. He was a seaman, and the weapon was a carbine.

He was taken to a French Naval Hospital, where he died 5 days later of uremia. (Suggesting he was wounded in the kidneys/bladder?)

I couldn't find much else in the way of details. The obituary mentioned the family had not been given any details.

The military doesn't like to talk about service members killed due to stupidity and/or training accidents.

Listed on the Korean War memorial: link

Newspaper obituaries say he was shot on ship.

The memorial listing says "France, the US Navy on shore duty in Cherbourg"

It's going to take some serious sleuthing to find out any details. You may have to go to Cherbourg and read through microfiche of 1951 newspapers.
