"For several years now, I have been casually studying the Army of Piedmont. It is of course unavoidable when you look at the Italian theatre of the War of the Austrian Succession. In history lessons in Germany, all I was told was that Frederick II acquired the province of Silesia in this war, or rather in the Two Silesian Wars. I was unaware that the war also had a massive impact on conditions in Italy, that armies moved back and forth through Italy, and that there were numerous battles that were comparable in size to those in Germany and Flanders. History lessons in the GDR, for example, were strongly focused on a view of history that focused on Prussia [1] when looking at the 18th century. In fact, this sometimes leads to an underestimation of the importance of, for example, the War of the Polish Succession for the political map of Europe. However, knowledge of this conflict is essential in order to understand the actions of King Carlo Emanuele III of Sardinia-Piedmont (1701-1773), who, in my opinion, can be counted alongside Frederick II of Prussia as one of the outstanding monarchs of the mid-18th century…"
