I am puzzled by the status of Saxe Gotha during the SYW. Using Kronoskaf as my source Regiment 9A of the Hanoverian Army in the Seven Years War was raised originally in Saxe-Gotha and later incorporated into the Hanoverian Army. Was Saxe Gotha allied to Britain and Prussia along with Brunswick, Hanover and Hesse-Cassell and at war with Austria and the rest of the Holy Roman Empire during the SYW.

Technically Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was part of the Holy Roman Empire and should have provided troops to the ReichsArmee. Therefore Austrian allies. The ruling family of the duchy were the Inhaberen (proprietors) of regiments in the Hannoverian, Austrian, Reichsarmee (Lower Rhenish – Westphalian District, under the Bishopric of Münster) and Saxon armies- that I know of. It seems the duke, Fred III, managed a major balancing act and avoided doing anything that may have offended any of the major players through the WAS and SYW.

You're welcome, Graham, but it wasn't much. I haven't been able to find much English-language info' on the minor states, and what there is tends to focus on the campaigns against France in Europe, India and Canada. Even the German members of Kronoskaf seem to have trouble getting information on a lot of the RA and other minor players. It's probable that a lot of primary information (portraits, unit documents, letters, etc) was destroyed in the WWII bombing campaigns and invasion of Germany, as well.
