Seen a chap on YouTube slowly getting to this point, but he's not quite there yet. Apparently the new future of wargaming. So, people write rules to sell, then they put out some files for people to print. Or some may just sell the files to print. Now, as the video points out, it's apparent that many of these businesses are now offering the figures preprinted. That's where I leave the chap as we head into the near future: People realise, or just through necessity/desire, that they can just buy the preprinted figures and not need to muck around with gubbins, or third party printers. Businesses see a surge in sales and can't print them fast enough. Businesses, realise it's cheaper to go to plastic/cast resin, hopefully metal. They do. Businesses realise offering files means the few customers still printing can print as many as they want and even give them away or sell them. Businesses stop offering files. Full circle. |

More YouTube… Got to get out more, next I'll be buying a 3d printer! A chap gave a tour of his printing "farm". He seems to be doing some good videos. He mentions that he makes some of his popular parts to keep in stock, and would like to keep more parts in stock. Add some captial and an injection machine (he already has many machines) and it's 3d what? In contrast, but agin helping prove my point, another chap starts selling 3d plant pots on demand on the footpath, I kid you not. Perhaps pointing to 3d printings true place once "proper" businesses move on. |

A lot there H Man! I'm going back to the beginning – of wondering what's the needs or motivation for the hobbyists – so might ask what's the purpose of wanting the minis for in the first place - Is someone wanting their minis primarily for the painting/displaying sake? Is someone wanting their minis for gaming sake? Ultimately, each of us has finite time to achieve our hobbyist goals, so at some point one must dial down and ask – what's going to be the driving motivation towards fulfillment, right? Personally, if I were acquiring figures for painting or displaying mostly, then metals, plastics, resins, 3D Prints all work pretty fine. If someone is shooting for a big wargaming project, then buying 3D Prints, or doing their own home-printing sounds very logical, until all the usual prep work comes along to finish up the project, in order to get the game on! 3D Printing?, business schemes for it, or home printing still hasn't solved the work needed for getting the game on. The supply chain's evolution?, and new manufacturing schemes……will ultimately come up against the consumer's individual reality – how much time is there for each of us to do the required/associated hobbyist's tasks? |

As I point out above, 3d printing businesses will eventually, and evidently have already begun to, realise/do the math that it's best to use other manufacturing methods to produce stock to store* and sell. As for people at home, yes, how much time do they have? 3d printing is a hobby itself, along with the commitment of time, money, and space. No matter how quick, cheap or small it may appear for some. And people do come to realise this, and dust is collected. Interesting times ahead. *After thought, someone is going to say storing stock costs money. It does. But Kickstarter or pre orders can alleviate the problem. |

Just to say Samcraft really has some good videos going. Probably worth a topic, at some point. Clear, relaxed, professional, informative, helpful, so on. |
