More great information. Thanks, although I'm not going to repaint the LTB units I inherited from a friend (2 in red and one in orange.) What variety of colors would be likely for London citizen garb in the TBs? I'm guessing muted colors, grays, browns and maybe black? Were buffcoats as usual for the musketeers as some publications have suggested? |

London Trained Bands I imagine quite well dressed, think of weekend warrior cyclists – high end kit for the bling factor rather than necessity. The auxiliary regiments made up of poorer men who were ineligible for membership of a TB would likely have much poorer, basic clothing. Normally I shy away from using black as it was a very expensive fabric, but as the LTB was populated by rich 'middle class' men it would be reasonable to drop a handful of black items in to the mix. Trained band buff certainly prevalent. I personally baulk at the idea of buff on musketeers, but that's just me. No reason that some didn't wear it – remember that they bought their own kit, and clothing in particular was a fashionable way of declaring their status. Other colours – I'd go for a smattering of brighter colours mixed in with greys and browns (have you seen the colour swatches I did? link ) Auxiliaries limit more to greys and browns. |

Thanks! There is a 28mm unit that I have been painting in gray for a Royalists regiment that may get a touch up and join the ranks of the Malcontents! |

Cheers S'nasty, happy new year. Found an interesting reference to grey wool recently. A C17th East Riding farmer talked about keeping 2 or 3 black sheep in a flock in order to make grey fleece/wool. Anymore and the fleece/wool mix became too coarse and unsellable |

Very cool reference. I wonder if that is how the Scots got their famous Hodden gray? |

Hidden? Yes it is. There's a contemporary 'recipe' stating how many black fleeces should be mixed into a set number of white fleeces. |
