"I can't help but imagine the words "study the blade" spoken in the most nasally, pre-teen voice possible, but when Gizmodo asked staff what kinds of gift guides they were interested in writing this year, I couldn't help myself. I wrote a story where one of my characters uses a reitschwere(?sp). I was going to get a replica to match it, but I thought the 3K to buy one was a bit steep. I'll reconsider someday if I start pulling down best-seller money… ;-) |

If someone else is a "buff", they already know the basics, and probably a lot of detail. If you are not, you should give them a gift certificate (no matter what they are a buff in) and a promise to particpate in the purchase (be a minor part of the activity). Can you imagine an article "The Shopping Guide for the Wargaming Buff in Your Life?". Most of us would be "Um, no. No. Meh. What? Kinda. No. No. That's OK. Meh. No." What I read was "How to Figure Out if You Want to Pick Up Swardsmanship as an Activity". |
