The last days I programmed a search for English images in the uniform portal; as this is divided in several sections like "uniform series" or "originals" I wanted to have an allover search by country. I also wanted to add a search for different unit types like infantry or cavalry.

All is based upon the keywords I refer to every image added to the uniform portal (today nearly 5.000 images).

The first new search site is reserved for English (British) units at link

As the program code is quite "generic" it is easy for me to adopt it for other countries, so more to follow in 2025.

Nicely done and helpful

Nice effort but many would appreciate accuracy in terms of Scottish, English and British entries.

Many thanks Markus,

Very useful.

Two corrections are required regarding "Aquarell von Ribeiro Artur aus dem Besitz der portugiesischen Militärmuseen in Lissabon und Bussaco.".

The first picture (wearing a tarleton helmet) is actually a cavalryman – (the English equivalent of the Portuguese text) under the copy of the picture in my possession says "Lusitanian Legion – cavalry (1807-1808)". He is not from the Loyal Lusitanian Legion.

The second picture of an infantry man depicted is also not from the Loyal Lusitanian Legion. The text under the copy of the picture in my possession says (the English equivalent of the Portuguese text) "Lusitanian Legion (Marques De Alorna) Infantry soldier 1808".

These troops, of course, became part of the units that served in the French Army as "Legion Portugaise".

Ian, thank you for the clarification – you're totally right and it suits better the series of Ribeiro Artur which I published on the site, cf. the Portuguese army at link

I corrected the two plates and they won't appear again wit the British/English/scottish/welch troops

@Jim from UK: in the German sources even from Richard Knötel always England is mentioned; I checked the official title of George III. and he'd been "King of Great Britain and Ireland" … so I should change at least the headlines to British, or is that wrong for the English, Scottish, welch or Irish?

Hi Markus

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The designations of British/English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh will always generate a question in some peoples minds and you'll never get all of them to agree.

It would be safer to use British in most cases unless you have detailed knowledge on any one particular image.

For example: a soldier in a kilt is most likely Scottish but will speak either Gaelic or English and his unit will be serving in the British (not English) army. But then he could be a Jacobite and fighting against the same British army.

A soldier in the Kings German Legion is most likely German, speaks German and his unit serves in the same British army. This could easily be quite true at Waterloo but his brother could be in the Prussian army.

I wish you luck in your endeavour.
