I want to try some WW1 naval actions to test if my rules can be successfully backdated to that period. As I don't want to commit to buying new fleets at this stage I want to try using suitable counters or flats. Does anyone know of a free or cheap source for these. My initial thoughts are for something like the plans as found in "Janes Fighting Ships". Yes, I could scan the appropriate pages and print at a suitable scale, but that can be a pain getting the scaling right as the scale is not always given. To start with Italian and Austro-Hungarian ships would make a change and enable some might-have-been actions. Alternatively pre-dreadnaughts for the Far East could be fun. |

I second Junior General for this. Scale to any size you need. Good selection. I once made some huge Napoleonic armies from JG for next to nothing to try out the period, liked them so much Instill have them. |

I have counters for the Russo-Jap War I could email to you – I can't recall where I found them on the Internet – it was a long time ago. |

There are no "top down" ships at the link provided by John Armatys. The only WW1 ships at the Junior General site are silhouettes: link Jim |

There are some on the Wargames Vault (RJ war…), and you can always look at Topside Miniatures link topsideminis.com |

thin cardboard and a pen. You are testing rules. We do it all the time (test rules and use cardboard). |

Thank you everyone. There seem to be plenty of the big beasts out there, but rather short on cruisers and smaller. I was surprised and impressed to see cutouts of RMS Titanic and Britannic (hospital ship) contributed by Mike Brady. I have been a fan of his for several years. @CAPTAIN BEEFHEART you are right, I am just being a) lazy and b) wanting a Rolls Royce solution when a Ford Focus will suffice. An hours work with card and pens should produce enough for initial testing, and no-one else will see. I particularly like the often assymetric nature of naval warfare and will try throwing a force of destroyers and light craft in a night against against a battle squadron. Or perhaps a weakened battle squadron with armoured cruiser reinforcement against a full battle squadron. |
