The HK Society of Wargamers held a refight of the 1633 encounter between Swedish troops and their German allies trying to stop an Imperial attempt to relieve the siege of Hamelin. A full write up can be found here link The historical outcome was not achieved on this occasion. The figures used are 10mm scale and are a mixture of Pendraken, Newline, Lancer, Irregular and a few other figures. |

Can anyone explain how those Swedish brigades work? To me the pike just seem to be in the way of those muskets in the centre, not to mention the second central shot block behind both pike and shot while hemmed in on either side by the other two pike blocks. |

Billy NM, that is a good question. I am not an expert on this but it helps me if I think of the Swedish Brigades as three normal battalia arrayed in a triangle (sometimes there were four battalia in a diamond, just to confuse things) trained to fight together. They had the manpower – and staying power – of the large Tercios favoured by the Imperial forces in the early part of the war, but had much greater flexibility because each of the sub-formations could act independently. The high level of training they were given allowed them to put their musket sections forward when they needed to deliver volley fire, then have the pike sections come forward to lead the assault. Pictures tend to show the brigades in just one disposition. My understanding is that it wasn't always like the standard depiction. As the Imperial forces moved towards smaller battalia/regiment formations with increased firepower of their own, the advantages of the Swedish formation over the Tercio fell away. After the heavy losses taken by the Swedes at Lutzen and then at Nordlingen in 1634, they dropped these formations in favour of the more linear tactics and smaller units being adopted by other armies. |

Really nice looking battle, the use of sabots for the basing is a nice touch. 10mm for 30YW always looks nice, you can project the mass of certain formations rather nicely. |
