Neat article. That 5" is a pretty sophisticated weapon.

I'm counting at least 29-30 5" shell casings on that deck….Damn!!! Someone's getting some hurt sent to them.

Some great news : the Red Sea is perhaps the most vital theater of operations for the West, a lot of our oil imports goes through there. So it's great to see some commanders trying to find a sustainable way to tackle the threat. Using a million $ missile to shoot down a cheap drone is no way to go…
THis leaves me however somewhat worried, as our Marine Nationale is turning to a 76mm Otto-Melara gun. 23 km range for the 5" vs 16km for the 76 mm.

Max range is great for the Naval Gunfire Support (NGFS) mission, but if you are engaging maneuvering aerial targets the majority of your gun kills are going to come within a few miles of your ship. The reason is time of flight of the projectile. For instance, it takes roughly seven seconds for the projectile to travel three miles, and thirty seconds for the projectile to get out to near maximum ranges (rough figures). Think of the gun as a big brother to the CIWS instead of looking at max ranges. Still a very viable AAW asset, a 5" airburst has a respectable lethal radius.
