Heroscape: Road to the Forgotten Forest

It's a terrain expansion for Heroscape, but will non-Heroscape gamers be attracted by the trees?

Several weeks ago, I posted about acrylic paint markers I found in the art supplies area of Amazon, and Michael's Crafting Stores. These were standard acrylic paint markers, some with dual tips: brush tips, and marker tips. I find them useful for miniatures painting, along with terrain painting, but mostly I prefer the brush tips.

Surprisingly(?), the Army Painter company is now releasing their SpeedPaints in paint markers! Here is a review of the SpeedPaint Markers, from Goobertown Hobbies, and the owner, Brent.

Like I stated in my previous post on the artist's acrylic paint markers, I find them extremely useful for both miniatures painting, and for painting terrain. The brush tips are the most useful, to me, as the brush tips offer both a fine tip for smaller application areas, as well as the side of the brush tip, for broader, faster application of paint.

Brent noted that the SpeedPaint within the pens, was not as effective as brush application, due to the lower volume of SpeedPaint which flows through the brush tips. I agree. If you do simple block painting with paint pens, however, you will gain considerable speed, saving time per miniature. For me, that is king! I believe with paint markers, I can reduce my 10 minutes of painting time, per figure, to perhaps 6-7 minutes per figure. Multiply that by 200 figures, and that adds up to 300-400 minutes (5 to 6+ hours!) of painting time saved, and that 10 minutes includes brushing on The Dip Technique, all in assembly line fashion. That is nothing to ignore, in my book. YMMV.

The paint markers flow more paint, faster, than I can get out of any ink markers, such as Sharpie brand. The coverage of acrylic paint markers is far superior to any ink-based marker, as well. To be honest, I would love to switch entirely to paint markers, and give away my acrylic paint bottles, but I can't bring myself to do that. I am, however, employing more paint pens, every chance I get, when painting my miniatures. For my terrain, I don't bother with paint bottles, at present, I just reach for a pen, and, Git'er done, Son. Cheers!

Do they dry out, or is it too early to tell.

You can find pretty good paint markers on Amazon pretty cheaply too! They also include metallics. I bought a 54 marker set for $23.00 USD including 8 to 10 metallic ones. I have used them and they work very nicely. They have a fine tip and a brush tip. Need to store these on their side. They come in sort of a giant Crayola crayon style box. I have also bought a bunch from Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Those worked well but cost more.

Markers are great for shield edge lining, painting tires and tons of more things. I don't really use them in place of my paint. Just as a helpful accessory and they do that VERY well!

Thanks.

John

How do they handle things like straps and reins?

I just watched the video on YouTube. A pretty good demonstration and assessment. I think Sarge's review above covers the topic well. Watching the video and seeing the results would lead me to believe that the markers would be good for straps and reins, as well as other detail applications. The markers allow excellent control. The markers will also do well for basic block coloring too. If I used them for block coloring, I would still use brush paints for highlighting. Overall, another useful tool for our painting tables

The paint pens provide much greater flow rate than ink-based markers, and this genuinely gives superior coverage over ink pens.

To date, I have only used black paint pens. I am building chipboard buildings, blackening the cut edges. I have used ink pens and paint markers… The paint pens are amazingly superior and faster than ink pens, providing excellent coverage.

I have not used them to paint figures yet. As Brent states in his video, there is no cleanup. I disagree with Brent on the durableness of brush tips -- I did wear mine out, but mine are a different brand.

The pens do come with a ball bearing inside for mixing the paint inside the pen. The dual tipped pens are my favorite type, giving the best of both worlds.

My pens have been in use for over a month, no drying out yet.

I find these paint pens a neat new tool. I hope to use them for simple block painting to speed my painting. I am all about speed painting. All I need is figures that look decent on the tabletop. Anything closer is unimportant to me. LOL! Cheers!

For fiddly things like reins and straps they are great!

Thanks.

John Leahy, what brand did you get from Amazon?

I'm not seeing these on the Army Painter site. Am I missing something?

Likely not: Brent @ Goober Town Hobbies likely got pre-market samples to play with, and review/promote on his YouTube channel. Cheers!

The Speedpaint markers are from Deep Cut Studios, they just use Army Painter SpeedPaint in them…

Thanks John!

No problem. I tried yellow first to see if it would work. It did. Remember to store them on their side.

Thanks.

John
