I'm remembering half a real life story here. Early in WWII, the Germans released some retired British naval officer as too old to be a threat in the new war. He went on to prove them wrong. I THINK he won a VC in WWI, and did small boat operations in WWII, but I couldn't swear to it. Does anyone else remember enough of the story to give me a leg up?

Thanks.

Admiral Walter Cowan, who had commanded "Princess Royal" at the Dogger Bank and Jutland in WWI. He attached himself to the Commando brigade led by Robert Laycock, and is mentioned in some of Evelyn Waugh's diaries and letters.

Thank you, 9PR! I hope he's the one. You'd hate to think there were two like that.
