Our annual Show game is in 2 weeks – it's late this year.
Today, we had a final planning meeting and a scratch game to consolidate rule changes.
We're using Black Powder & the scratch game was a rough & cut-down version of Abu Klea.

Some rule mods include forbidding a triple move & shoot in the same phase (too "gamey") and allowing bespoke Dervish skirmish units to "go to Ground" (where they can't easily be shot at) & then able to rise & shoot at any suitable target.

The key to the Sudan is a contest against Anglo-Egyptian firepower & the ferocity of Mahdist hand-to-hand combat.

This trial game emphasised the waste of cavalry charging undamaged infantry:

And we've also tweaked the command rules with adding an ADC (& a +1 ) if attached to a brigade commander.

The Show game will use many, many more figures & have a riverine aspect as well as a desert one with 2 Arab dhows confronting the 2 imperial steamers.

I'll post photos of the event in a fortnight.
