A good summation and interpretation of goals and problems that were faced by both navies.

Deeply flawed,IMO. The British and French were the real pioneers and leaders in warship development. Some of the statements by the authors show an astounding lack of awareness regarding the development of naval technology.

HMS Warrior was the most powerful warship in the world at this time. Britain and France had been converting or building steam ships for years already. Gloire was the first real ironclad. They did not turn to turrets as a result of ACW turrets. Cowper Coles was working on turrets like Erikson's before the war. Central battery ironclads preceded turrets. There are so many ways in which European navies led the way while the US fell hopelessly behind, there is not room to list them all. Read Peter Padfield's The Battleship Era for a good overview.

Sorry Armand…I just couldn't let those guys skip over Great Britain and France, the real pioneers.
