Napoleon of the West20 Nov 2024 8:17 p.m. PST

Today Edward and Josh begin a new series where they talk about different periods and how to get into wargaming for them. First up is the venerable Napoleonic period, where they talk about why they love the period, what to look out for, what scales to try, and a few rules to consider when jumping in.

The groupies?

This is an example of where a transcript would be useful.

Devoting 50 minutes to listening to a podcast – which may or may not hit the spot – is not possible.

There is nothing better than a nicely plumed bell top shako to lend a touch of class to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl

You paint trousers and jacket: you have a toy soldier.
You paint face and hands: you have a human.
You paint a musket: you have 18th or 19th century.
You paint a shako and plume: viola! Napoleonic!

I enjoyed doing research on uniforms and tactics of the era.

The OFM's right: it's all those screaming teenage girls when they see the Old Guard moving in for the kill.

Sadly, Stoppage is also right. Listening to someone talk is a slow way to receive information. And I say that as someone who has done more than his share of the talking.

Good for listening to while in the bath or painting figures!

Yes, I had to aquire a bat to beat off all the ladies that started coming after me when I picked up napoleonics.

@Nothw

"Beat-off" – might care to re-phrase.

@rpepper:

I always watch telly with subtitles.

I do not consume cartoons with their NLP "techniques". (esp. Robin Williams)

The best thing about Napoleonics is posting up a picture of your freshly painted miniatures, online, and then waiting to be berated because your turn backs are not quite the right shade of rose, you gave the unit gold button lace and everyone knows it's actually silver, your unit flag is 2mm to big to be to scale and anyway you've used January the 1807 pattern flag and not the correct March 1807 flag 😁

Ask the "critics" what edition of the uniform book they're criticizing your miniatures from.
"Ah, it's Gesundheit and Weiß, 1987!"
"Okay. I consulted the 2012 revised edition."

The best thing about Napoleonic gaming is the beautiful figures on the table in large battalions.
