Looking for ideas to model (or buy) a tree line that is not a line of big trees lining a driveway to a mansion, but is more of an eclectic collection of mostly small diameter trees that have grown together. It is almost a very narrow, dense forest.

I am new to terrain building, and open to any and all advice.

The link below is a street view near Flieden, Germany. It seems that a lot of the creeks and road in this area have these types of tree lines.

You'll need a mix of manufacturers and materials. Are you in the USA?

You don't mention what scale. If very small then you can cut and tear out tree shapes from foam and then paint them – nice and robust if for gaming.

The OP said 6mm.

Scroll down until you see buildings and greenery for some excellent ideas:

Is this what you are looking for? Needs to be printed. If you don't have a printer or know someone a quick google search should find lots of options near you. I have these and they look fine.

In 6mm you can buy clump foliage for the trees. I use inverted roof nails for trunks. Glue the nails to a base, and put the clump foliage on top.

You could also adapt my "flexible" forests:

Puffballs out of fabric & craft shops are another option, but remember you need variety in size and color.

Wow!!! Thanks for the great suggestions. I plan on trying all of them.

I am in the USA.

There is a game store close by that has many printers (resin and plastics). I know from friend's experience that 3D printers take some work, but for $5 USD I can get the file and take it to them.

I was going to build 1' x 1' modular boards from sound insulation felt panels, but it is more work than anticipated. The felt soaks up so much paint it takes a while to paint them. So, I am off to buy a battle map for now. However, I do plan on restarting the project and using pins as the tree trunks for those smaller trees is perfect.

I have seen some canopies before and thought that was a great visual effect, but using screen makes it better.

My wife is a crafter, so I have some of those pompom balls around.

Check back in a few weeks and I will let you know how I fared.

Thanks again

If you go with the 3D printed you don't need to print them in resin, fdm works fine on them and I assume it would be cheaper.

Battlescale here in UK has recently produced clumps of trees for 3mm scale games, but they could easily be used with 6mm figures. They are cast in resin, just need painting. Example here:
