Greetings all. Would any good folk be able to guide me to information on the general attitude to recovering casualties among the forces of Islam during the Crusading and Reconquista period. Were there for instance religious obligations that required an effort to be made to recover the fallen if at all possible during a withdrawal (as opposed to a rout) so they could be given burial according to Muslim law? Many thanks |

Shari'ah law mandated burial in the ground but so did Catholic doctrine. It seems probable from a morale standpoint, they would make an effort to collect any dead if possible but from my study of Islam and history, there is no record of Islamic forces recovering their dead with any greater or lessor fervor than their opponents. Major Muslim armies of the period were equipped with medical facilities. These were probably better equipped and had better staff than their opponents in the early part of the period. I have not found any writing that would indicate a willingness to recover their wounded in a withdrawal situation different from that of their opponents. If they could, they did. |

Thank you. That is a useful perspective. |
