A strange title I know, but á propos nothing in particular I saw a little historical example of 'plus ça change, plus la même chose'.

I was watching a historical documentary which included a newsreel of Molotov undertaking a state visit to Germany before the War. As he gets off the train there is a German Army band wrapped up in greatcoats and helmets playing the 'Presentiermarch', the German equivalent of the British Army's 'General Salute'. No sooner was the documentary over than the news came on and there was some political VIP (I forget who) arriving in Germany and being greeted by a German Army band playing the 'Presentiermarch' more than 80 years later. Less percussion now but the same tune.

I found the continuity fascinating and an example of how despite all the alarms and excursions of history some things do not change.
