Schilling Miniatures is to cease trading at the end of the year, but they were never accessible to us in the UK post Brexit and who could blame them? Thomas Mishack in Germany has often contributed to the Waterloo in 20mm Project led by Capt Siborne and offered to help out with a "donation". I think this shows the scale of that donation and I am very grateful to him. To work. No Shermans for a while

Looking forward to seeing your touch on these. Will it be painting only or some conversions as well? |

Oh, dear – I've continued to buy stuff from all over Europe. Have I been doing wrong? |
CHRIS DODSON | 05 Nov 2024 1:48 p.m. PST |
Thomas is always a supremely generous gentleman who I am pleased to say has been a good friend for many years now. His Waterloo diorama, whilst not on the scale of the Good Captain's, is nevertheless massive and sits in a bunker no less. Walking through the blast proof door into his man cave was an experience. His support, friends network and enthusiasm has helped sustain my projects and this contribution is indicative of his character. Well done Thomas. Best wishes, Chris |

Buying stuff from Europe? If you stay below 100 (is it Euros or pounds?) in a purchase you are usually OK. Over that you get hit for duty and almost the same again for the handling fee by the postal service. What I did not know is that gifts attract duty for anything over £38.00 GBP……….. You cannot win. You can't break even. You can't even get out of the game. Not planning any conversions here (other than changing the covered wagons to double draft.) |

Hi, Duties depend on how you have shipped the items a what value they are. Goods that have a value below £39.00 GBP will be duty and tax free. Goods between £40.00 GBP a d £135.00 GBP will be duty free but subject to VAT @ 29% for most goods. Goods over £135.00 GBP will be charged duty and VAT . HMRC do not normally directly contact importers for the taxes. If any taxes are due and the goods have been sent by post then the post service will contact the receiver and ask them / someone to pay online . Who pays does not matter. If the goods have come by fast parcel courier then it depends on what was arranged when you dispatched the goods. Again they will usually contact the recipient for payment. This seems Worldwide and not restricted to European purchase. I still am purchasing from Franznap and Hagen without problems. Wishing Jorg and Ulrike Schilling, a very happy retirement. Best wishes, Chris |

I do take your point about Worldwide applicability now, but pre-Brexit we had a European Union "Common Market", without such bureaucracy and expense. That info is a huge help and I suspect merits a post of its own, onto many Message boards here. Many thanks |

Anything from continental Europe has always been ridiculously expensive as far as postage goes for me down here in New Zealand. From the UK it has always been acceptably affordable – depending on exchange rates. |

and I see I still got it wrong, when I repeated his full name. It is my age. Mischak, nothing else. Thomas Mischak. Those vehicles are 20mm Westfalia (had many a 28mm back in the day) all by Niels Rullkotter (and I will surely have misspelled NR's name) and they are of the expected incredible quality. Painted and first wash applied on all today and I cannot believe how good they already look |

A few minutes of sunshine, so some quick photos before I spray with Matte Varnish. Mdme E.Tuile does not take her name from the English or French Languages, but it seemed appropriate to me

Very nice. The Royal Artillery signage is especially well done in my opinion. Best wishes, Chris |

The central emblem? (which is right for the RA in 1815) Two different punch sizes and decals (transfers to us) for a Bristol Beaufort, made by a company called Frog in the UK. I guess I never made it, but why I kept it for 50 years I have no idea. A large punch out of the blue roundel for the outer. 24 hours later, a smaller punch from the red of the markings. LOTS of Decal setting solution. Then my wife's gold ink pen for Christmas cards (it is fantastic) and today a matte varnish spray over the whole lot. Maybe still a second brush coat of varnish (Windsor and Newton Galleria, nowt better) For the lettering, the French was totally informal anyway. For the British, if used at all I imagine smaller than shown. I have tried to use contemporary "typeface" (stress tried) but some Rs are better than others, the Y is right, I simply could not get in the Royal Cipher into that central red disc. The Gold dots around the blue outer obviously spell Royal Artillery….obviously, you are just not looking hard enough. |
