I didn't watch it, but PLUTO was a major failure. It really never delivered much oil, and certainly not enough to make it worth the cost of manufacture and deployment.

But it was a great propoganda item to show how cool and scientific the Allies were, but almost no one ever does any actual research into it- they just quote one another.

Yes. That certainly applies here. I tried to Google "How many Sherman tanks could a Liberty ship carry?" This was obviously for a different thread here on TMP.
The immediate answer was "244", which was absurd on the face of it. Curiously, or not, every single link copied the exact same wording. Submitting that in a grad school paper would be shot down for plagiarism. 🤷
Such is Internet "research". Copying.
