Also, many thousands of Maori served in regular army units. My father's own platoon sergeant was a Maori guy called Mick Kenny who was a great rugby player. In an attack Mick was hit in the guts by a burst of mg42 fire. Dad said they thought he had been cut in half. He was hit six or seven times, lived and went on to continue playing rugby after the war with a couple of bullets still inside him. Dad said he "was the toughest bastard I ever knew". I had the honour of meeting him several times at Dad's battalion reunions. Mick lived well into his 80s. |
