I'm just curious, did the French Foreign Legion have an official or unofficial colour barrier for recruits? If so, when did it end?

Men of all races could enlist, though there was a preference for Europeans, especially those from French-allied or neutral countries. Many North Africans and Sub-Saharan Africans served in the Legion, often in lower ranks.

Most nonwhites were steered towards the native formations in L' Armee D' Afrique. Although there was plenty of French whites serving in them.
