Just posted an AAR of a trial game using a TYW rule set on my new blog at:

That was a good AAR and it is interesting when you said games are usually only about 8 turns long. It is also good to see that a TYW set can accommodate the ECW. They do look worth a try as a set of rules. The basing laid out within the rules also makes it easy to see what is needed.

Your troops are lovely. There is something about the old figures.

korsun0 – in Tercios games are never longer than 8 turns. If, after the 8th turn, neither side has a sufficient points margin to declare a Decisive, Clear or Fair victory then the result is a draw. I don't recall a game getting to the 8th turn yet – a lot happens in a turn.

Righto, I misunderstood, thanks for clearing it up :)
How long is a game, roughly? 2-3 hrs?

I think that game took around 4 hours maybe a bit less if you discount coffe/tea breaks. It was a learning game for my opponent but I don't think it would go much quicker with both sides more practised. I find the alternate unit activation by each side seems to slow the game down c.f. the more common IGO-UGO sequence.

Very nice AAR. I love Tercios, I played them with a friend this weekend at HMGS Fall In.

We used them for a bit later period, the battle of Killiecrankie (1689) to be precise. Figures were 6mm on a 4x3 table. I was very pleased with how they handled Highlanders. After 7 turns, the Williamite forces were able to claim a "fair" victory.

It's a shame the rules never saw an additional printing because they provide the best like and shot experience I've had on a gaming table. They are very hard to get hold of these days and every time I play with someone, they always try to find a copy.

PAR – I agree it's a shame they haven't done more with them as some of the mechanics are quite nice. They are also fairly easy to tweak for different periods or for differnet perspectives – one element I've always felt wasn't right was how hard it was for light troops to react to flee as they tend to have less discipline than most but should almost flee as a matter of course when overmatched.

I absolutely love these rules. I NEVER rebase minis (not once in forty years of gaming, until now) but I did rebase my entire collection of 15mm ECW/TYW figures to play these! Once I had gotten my gaming group up to speed on the rules we started a campaign that saw huge games splayed to a decision in a four-hour gaming period. We even started a campaign. epicureanwars.blogspot.com
To me one of the best parts is the basing system that forces the player to use historical formations so that the battles look like those wonderful old woodcuts!

BillyNM, a friend and I are working on an ACW version, a simple matter of adjust base sizes and weapons effects.
