I know that the Zeltbahn was commonly worn for camouflage purposes in the Wehrmacht Heer. Was this also a habit in the Waffen SS? Or was this habit adopted less as camouflage uniforms were more common?

The SS had their own patterns. But why wear them if the uniform was also cammo? The did wear them when it was useful in terms of weather- wet or cold. They are quite nice when it is wet out. When it is hot they are uncomfortable.

Zelts we're usually worn as rain capes, as that is what they were for, as well as making shelters. You can tell if units are wearing them as camo as their webbing is on the outside, it really wasn't that common, although there are a few photos showing g whole companies in them (webbing outside).

So, if it was raining, the SS would put their Zelts on. The smocks are anything but waterproof.

That all makes sense to me. Thanks for the information.
