All,
After a long absence, the Time Magazine special on D&D has revived my interest in fantasy gaming. Being a life long historical gamer, everything I have is geared toward that. Though I am building a nice collection of fantasy minis. When it comes to terrain though, I'd prefer in this case to use some quick, easy and useful. The Loke Battle Mats seem to tick off all the boxes. However, I'm not sure which would be the most useful. I don't want just dungeons. Those who use the Loke products, which would you recommend?

Like you, I've done historicals for years, so I am just starting to get into fantasy. I bought the Wilderness books of battle mats, but I haven't actually used them yet. My thinking was that I am most interested in battles above ground, not so much in exploring dungeons. This should also be useful for historical skirmish games.

I also thought that I could use this set of mats in conjunction with 3D scenery: hovels, tents, trees, and so on to create a more attractive battlefield. I have noticed people doing this on their websites. One had a tavern with the mat showing the flooring, walls, and doors and a bar and tables placed around the room. Obviously, just how far you want to go with adding terrain.

If your local store carries the books of mats, the mats in the book are shown small on the back. My recollection is that several had outdoor and indoor scenes.

I have the Loke books and they are quite useful and fast if that is what you are going for. They have a few out with different maps both indoor and out. They lay flat and are across the center so while open you get to use the whole book.

They are also coated so you can dry erase on them.

Well, I did it. Based on their recommendation, I ordered The Big Book of Battlemats Revised.

I've got it, but honestly have no idea what to do with it, so it's for sale!
