October 25th, 1944, the Battle Off Samar, where the US Navy covered itself in glory. link A fascinating battle with many what-ifs. One thing I have wondered about is why is it the "Battle OFF Samar" instead of the "Battle OF Samar"? I know that Samar was the nearest significant land mass, but if that was the way we name naval battles why isn't it the "Battle OFF Trafalgar" or the "Battle OFF Jutland"? Anyone know? |

Amen to all of your stories. The "Tin Can" and "jeep" carrier sailors were glorious indeed. |

I'm heard that the land battle on that island, which occurred later in the campaign, takes prescient as the Battle OF Samar. Don't ask me why the "Naval Battle OF Guadalcanal" is not called the "Battle OFF Guadalcanal" per the same rule. Duncan |
