On the whole, no country suffered more than Poland in WW II. Oh, far more Russians died, and The Holocaust touched all occupied nations, but Poland was bought, sold, pushed, pulled, divided and enlarged by all parties, Nazi's and Allies. Nothing to be proud of here in the West regarding the fate of the Polish People--and when they regained their freedom with the end of the Soviet Union, even that was largely by their own doing. Poor old Poland. Like Belgium, just in the wrong place, between traditional enemies. Poland has gone from a massive territory, taking in the modern Baltic states and Ukraine and much of the Western USSR, to non-existent at times. |
