There is a brilliant documentary series called, if memory serves, Putin and the West. There is one part in it where Putin enters a school classroom to discuss, with several high ranking oligarchs, what needs to be done to reopen a state highway that has been blocked by striking factory workers (from a one factory town which has been threatened with closure because it is a failed enterprise and its production is no longer required or profitable). The surprising thing about the scene is that the men in the room are all very powerful men in their own right (including the second and fourth richest men in the country – think Gates and Musk) but when Putin enters they are immediately and very visibly cowed into silence. There is no conversation or negotiation; only Putin speaks. Within a matter of minutes the dispute is settled – he simply states that the factory will not close and gets all of the oligarchs to sign up to that agreement there and then. His power is absolute – everyone is terrified of him. Remember, this factory is a privately 'owned' asset but, no matter, it does not suit Putin to close it so the oligarchs are required to keep it open and suck up the losses from their own pockets. I suppose the oligarchs know that to refuse Putin will mean them taking an unassisted flight out of a 10th story window. |
