Today on Brushes & Bayonets, Edward and Josh broach a forbidden subject in miniature wargaming – our thoughts on scales and which we subjectively like best for certain periods. We go from 28mm to 2mm and for each major scale talk about what kind of game we think that size miniatures is best used for.

You will know that 2mm and 28mm are 'sizes' but fortunately most wargamers will understand you anyway.

Who forbade that subject? And when?

That does seem an odd choice of words.

Easy conversion between size and scales: 1800mm is 6 feet (dropping those niggly fractions of a mm.)

Figure scale: 25mm (size) divided into 1800= 72nd scale.(1/72)
Opposite way works also:
Figure size: 1/144th scale divided into 1800= 12.5mm SIZE.

The calculation is the denominator (bottom number) of the fractional scale.

One will soon realize that designers have different ideas in how they work. The numbers do not lie.

Countless times we have seen this controversy. Humans vary in size, their weapons or vehicles do not.

The latter can be 1/72 or 1/144th etc, but then cannot vary between makers (allowing for the perils of scale thin kit in metal on a wargame table, or even the challenge of casting them in metal)

But the figures? 28mm, 25mm, 20mm etc etc (and we all know this, I do accept). Is it base to eyeball, do you ignore the thick base, is it to the top of a bare head and so on?

But I think Napoleon of the West was just asking about our favourite of these sizes/scales for gaming. If I ever got back to throwing dice it would be 6mm, so I can see who the units are, but actually have something that looks realistic on a table.
