GW has a new edition of LOTR.

Gosh this is getting interesting.

This changes nothing on my feelings of the games imminent demise (sad to say).

As if rings of power were not a bullet enough dodged, GW grab desperately for the next film hype spin off, a cartoon no less.

Interestingly the Rohan infantry are being replaced by a new sprue.

This is of course odd, as the old one is fine and there are older sprues (cough, goblins, cough) that are still in use today.

However, the new film is about Rohan.

But, still why redo the sprue and not just reuse the existing sprue like the bad pennies goblins (terrific models, but you get the point)?

I suspect licencing agreements that may well change the face of GW LOTR.

They probably can't use the old figures with the new game. Probably in the rule book though?

Also the new figures are likely based off the cartoon also. However, I believe the cartoon is based on the film hexilogy (or whatever you call it).

Existing Rohan houses are included.

It will be interesting, as they may have seen increased interest in the game around rings of power, so expect the same here.

Will this put the wheels back on?

Probably not.

Being a cartoon, it's likely to be pretty neich. Trilogy fans may not take, ala hobbit/rings of power. Not to mention the writing direction taken, Russian Roulette these days.

They'll get a bunch of kids…, well there you go then.

I do wonder if the new figures will replace the existing Rohan box?? Or will this game try to replace the entire range?? Is this the doom I have fortold??

Probably.

Are the new figures out? Do you have a link?

Don't think it's out yet.

Thank you. Nice looking figures. As usual, the starter set might be a good deal, but leader and add-on packs will be ridiculously priced.

Do you know if this is supposed to be a full length movie?

Looks great – pretty sure I will get the starter set, buildings and dunlendings will be new for me.

Not super excited about the movie but I will probably see it.

Nice to see GW supporting their best game again.

Yes it's interesting.

I was reading up, then forgot to post.

It's going to cinemas and is by newline.

Apparently the film is a vehicle to secure the rights for newline.

I may assume GW buying rights help with finding what is otherwise a rights extension project, and lend it some extra credibility.

Likely GW didn't have to pay too much.

If successful, it may spur a line of such cheaper films. Or revitalise prospects of a new live action film/s.

Remember this is seperate to rings of power, if I recall correctly.

Rings of power wasn't newline and didn't have the hobbit or trilogy to use. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well – it's a full length animated movie getting a cinema release:

Those deep in Tolkien's lore may wish to take a stress ball to crush instead of crying out:

"Mumaks in Dunland? Mumaks in Dunland?"

or

"She gets saved by the Lurker in the deeps? What the very flippity do dah?"

or

"what kind of idiot starts a fist fight with Helm Hammerhand? That's Helm Hammerhand….there's a hint in the name…."

I don't really hold up a lot of hope for the film – but damn it they can take my money and prove me wrong – if they can. If they can.

The H Man17 Oct 2024 5:10 p.m. PST

Also theres some woman they made up a name for apparently.

I suspect, like all the film's and shows really, they aren't made for fans of the books, but for the mass public who haven't read them.

I also suspect the GW game is now at such a low level, lower than during the trilogy, that the new films reception matters little.

They'll freshen things up with a new starter box, and some more kits. But it will just be new players replacing ones who give up at this point.

I have a client who still wont go near the hobbit trilogy figures.

It is good, however, that GW do more Rohan and men as they seem under done as far as figures ranges.

The H Man29 Oct 2024 11:12 p.m. PST

I still wonder if this new box/film isn't over reaching.

Like all the new releases Warlord said they had for dr who. Then it went belly up.

The old world was a risk for GW, but seemed to have worked out ok.

Maybe they got high on risk taking.

"A new edition based on a Japanese anime lord of the rings film. Sure, why not?!"

The word anime puts me off. And I've never finished the books.

Old fans may buy the box (if you have to) to get the rules, but then go for the existing figures.

This could easily go either way.

I suspect it will be that annoying bump at the end of the slide.

Less than a month now to the film opens…but the figures are already revealed in more detail!

And they look pretty darn good.

The H Man16 Nov 2024 8:22 p.m. PST

As do from 20 years ago.

The H Man21 Jan 2025 2:10 a.m. PST

Looking at the new figures, why redo the Rohan chaps?

There are even older figures, after all.

Then i saw the letters along the bottom. No NLP in sight.

They are obviously doing new figures for it because they probably can't use any newline ones.

Next question, what about the photos in the book? Are there any newline figures in there?

Also, I'm not seeing much value for the price. Especially when most fans would have a heap of Rohan anyway. And likely the rule book too, or is it a new one?

You can tell it's not aimed at new players, like the original 3 boxes. Just look at the nightmare sprues and awkward multi part figures. No single piece figure in sight.

Then again that price point would put anyone off from trying it out.

The H Man23 Jan 2025 4:53 a.m. PST

I wonder if both newline and Warner Bros (?) Rohan chaps will be available going forward?

And is the new box the new game box, or just a temporary spin off?

As in, will the existing LOTR line remain, and even continue (for a short time, at least)?
