Any recommendations as to a translation of Caesar's Gallic Wars?

I don't need a copy that has both the original Latin along with the English text and would prefer a good, clear translation, along with maps if possible.

It would be nice to get an opinion, given the number of publications out there, which might lead you to think sticking a pin in the list would do the job!

I had to read it in Latin at school

Oh you mean like: Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur.

Er, no thanks!

Thanks for the thought 42flanker but it really has to be on paper.

Again if you live in the US, I might have something you would be interested in.

Me too. And it's amazing that the nuns didn't destroy any interest in Roman history I may have had. I still automatically assume that the Romans are the Bad Guys.

I bought The Landmark Julius Caesar: The Complete Works by Anchor Books, translation by Kurt Raaflaub. It includes maps and very extensive footnotes for Gallic War, Civil War, Spanish War, etc. (so not just Gallic War). Seems excellent so far.

You can get the Loeb books pretty cheap second hand. They all have English and Latin side by side (or English and Greek for Arrian and the like)

Thanks wtjcom

That was also recommended to me by someone outside of TMP.

Looks like that's where my money is going!

Could it have something to do with Caesar being responsible for 500,000 to 1 million dead Gauls?

More like Livy being a fussy old lady.

KIDS TODAY DONT want to do the hard work and do the Latin! Harrumph!
"Having been influenced by these things, Caesar not only took up his impediments (Oh, that's baggage???) and made a march on the Arglebagdui."

Just to say I purchased The Landmark Julius Caesar: The Complete Works and it is most definitely the Real Deal, ticking all the points in my OP.

Well worth the money!
