Great! :-) My first Buonaparte in Italy (General without plume) painted and looks good. Also Cuirassieurs are splendid, Bravo! One Officer have head from Spanish Dragoon? |
von Winterfeldt | 05 Oct 2024 5:10 a.m. PST |
yes indeed, I had two cuirassier officers, so I used them well, the other one got then the Spanish Dragoon ones, looking forward to paint the newly produced generals as well. |

Up to your usual standard – I'll keep this open to inspire me for a while. Not to mention the Cuirassiers I just primed (with a real mans' helmet). Really shows how nice the Sho Boki miniatures are, particularly the faces. If I might ask a couple of questions How do you get such a nice tone and gradation on the bay horses? What is your recipe for faces? Thanks John |
von Winterfeldt | 05 Oct 2024 10:04 p.m. PST |
for the bay horses I did stick to my usual method, white priming, a heavy wash / glazing with a deep violet, the block in the basic underpainting colour like a dark skin tone, don't overpaint over the recesses ( so far all acrylic) – then I used artist water colours adding a bit flow improver and paint retarder- paint fully over the underpainted horse and then use a wet tip of a brush to take the water paint off to create the highlights. Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, mixing them, to add Sepia were darker hues are to be achieved are working very well for this. As for faces, burnt Umber acrylic artist paint – the block in a dark skin tone don't overpaint the recesses, like eyes, slit of mouth, sides of the nose, etc and the light with lighter flesh paint, in case of need apply a filer of burnt Sienna and finally set some highlights with extra light skin colour. I hope this makes some sense, in case you like to know more – don't hesitate to ask. |

Very nice. Quick question, what colour did you use for the hooves? Thank you in anticipation |
von Winterfeldt | 06 Oct 2024 7:52 a.m. PST |
for hooves a mix of natural umber with Naples yellow |

These are 18mm figures with eyebrows. In 28mm most of us know to not ever try to show eyes, just shade the eye sockets and leave it at that. The bays are great of course, but that dappled grey…..I wish |
