Interesting. Some of the work seems very sophisticated and other pieces seem very crude, kind of cartoonish. Especially in the Fantasy section. But maybe the artist was going for a more cartoonish look as opposed to more realistic approach.

Most artwork from the era are what is called sketch books. Most were black and white with a few had water colors added. This is why that is the type of artwork, I authorized for my primer books on the Spanish and Germans in the AmRev.

They seem in the most part to be worked up from photos of re-enactors. A short cut that can expose artistic limitations.
