Most politicians are here today, gone tomorrow and their effects are short lived, for which we are genially thankful; but yesterday President Carter celebrated his 100th birthday and his great goal was very close to being achieved. how many Americans know what it is?

Could not delegate , although with his underlings maybe understandable. gos to show that intelligence is not a indicator of success.

Well said Mark, well said. And lifting a glasses saluting President Carter.

One of our worst presidents who became one of our best ex-presidents.

Jimmy Carter was a personal friend of my grandfather. They worked together for many years when Carter was Governor of Georgia, and my grandfather was the State Director of Forestry. My grandparents attended the inauguration with an invitation from Carter. Carter offered my grandfather a federal position, but my grandfather preferred to continue his work in Georgia, and turned down the offer.

Though they remained friends, my grandfather became disappointed in Carter's presidency, and wound up supporting Reagan, despite being a life-long Democrat. Indeed, my whole family were Reagan Democrats, and by the time of his second term, fully Republican. But we've never lost our respect for Carter's personal character— he was and still is a very good man.

There is a powerful lesson in the observable fact that good men make bad presidents. Of course, bad men make bad presidents, too.

Much more effective after he left office yet so close in the Middle East

Clinton wasn't happy with Carter over the North Korea diplomacy.

We just passed the 46th anniversary of the Camp David accords. Egypt, once Israel's most dangerous and implacable enemy, has not only been at peace with them since 1978 but has become a cooperative partner. So that was pretty good work.

But yes, his post-Presidential career has been his greatest work. The Carter Center is on the verge of eradicating Guinea Worm disease, with only 14 cases reported last year. This would make it only the second transmissible disease (after smallpox) to be eliminated in human history. The Center has eliminated River Blindness in large parts of Africa and could be on track to eradicate it in the coming decades. The Center has also dramatically reduced cases of schistosomiasis/bilharzia in Africa and Latin America (50% in some areas) and delivered tens of millions of treatments (with a 90% efficacy rate) for those infected. The Agriculture Program (1986-2011) educated millions of farmers in developing countries, introducing sustainable and higher yield practices as well as drought and disease resistant crop varieties. It is estimated to have prevented one billion deaths from starvation and malnutrition related diseases.

Not too shabby.

I see my previous comment was deleted. Hmmmm.

I will not say he was the worst president in my lifetime but, President Carter's administration was so bad that he lost his re-election 489 to 49. He won only 6 states.

He is the one of the best former presidents.

"The Carter Center is on the verge of eradicating Guinea Worm disease". Credit to Enfant Perdus, who hit the bullseye.

A fantastic and humanitarian accomplishment. Well done, President Carter.

Carter had some problems. He was an SSBM Skipper. And worked with nukes. Actually, if the stories are true, he heroically stopped the nuke material they were working with from "going nuclear". Again, if the stories are correct. I really need to research this more.

IMO he is not the worst POTUS in modern times, 'nuff said … options vary …
