I've been toying with the idea of expanding my baroque collection of WSS miniatures. Many European armies started the War of the Spanish Succession dressed and equipped similarly to how they appeared in the later War of the League of Augsburg. Some cocked hats (tricornes) were formal, some were still informal. Many of the major players were still in power, like King Louis XIV, King William III and Emperor Leopold I.

It seems that Khurasan Miniatures recognizes this overlap, and are now providing some interesting possibilities. If you look at the Khurasan website, you will now find among the figures of the Late 17th Century range, "Very Late 17th Century French" musketeers charging, and also French infantry command figures of the same period. The French infantry are pictured charging using socket bayonets but they wear the informal tricorne of the Late 17th century. The command has similar headgear and look determined to lead the "Furia Francese" charge.

Khurasan miniatures from this range are generally compatible with 15mm ranges like Minifigs and Irregular. Some time ago I put out a size comparison.

After corresponding with Khurassan I understand that more 1690s period infantry will be manufactured and will be out next. I am looking forward to these, as I plan to use LOA and WSS miniatures together when appropriate.

Nice looking figures, especially the winged hussars.

Hello 79thPA,

Although I haven't done Polish Late 17th Century, I agree, the 15mm winged hussars would look wonderful painted up on my wargame table, making their charge to rescue Vienna.

One of the reasons I like the whole range is because the sculptor is Clibinarium. He has also sculpted other 15mm ranges for Khurasan, not to mention the newer 10mm LOA range for Pendraken. I really like the quality of Clibinarium's sculpts. Also, he seems to have a good understanding of 15mm scale, as his figures, although on the larger end of 15mm, are not 18mm. They work well with Minifigs and Irregular for LOA. His sculpting for 10mm Pendraken LOA is top notch, that's why I'm in such anticipation of the new 15mm flintlock figures Clibinarium will be doing for Khurasan's Late 17th Century range (or should I say VERY Late 17th Century range!)

Cheers!

Keep an eye on the size of Khurasan horses relative to horses of other companies. I have a ton of Blue Moon WSS figures, and their horses are significantly smaller than the Khurasan range. I actually believe the Khurasan horses are terrific, and seem better sized (and am contemplating replacing my BM horses as a result), but it is something to doublecheck with the LoA range versus other manufacturers.

Years ago the Eureka SYW range had this same issue. A friend of mine bought a ton of Eureka horses and remounted two armies with Eureka horses, but it was a pain.

Hi Yogi,

I'll have to get out my Blue Moon and Khurasan horses and have a look. If you are referring to Khurasan's Spanish Succession range horses, I don't actually have any of those. I do have the horses from Khurasan's Late 17th Century range. The horses from that range were sculpted by Clibinarium, so are probably not as large as the Broadbent sculpted horses for the WSS range (which is more like 18mm.)

Now that I think of it, the Blue Moon cavalry do seem smaller and compatible with 15mm ranges like WSS Minifigs and Roundway. The Blue Moon infantry, on the other hand, are taller, more like the Khurasan WSS infantry.

Just a addendum, as I was checking out the Khurasan website I was surprised to find some new additions to the Late 17th Century range. They now have Venetian infantry and cavalry.
I'm hoping that I'll soon be seeing the new flintlock figures (with informal tricornes) added to the mix.

Cheers!

Gallo—yes, I was referring to Khurasan's Spanish Succession horses. I don't know about the LoA range, which was why I was couching my concern in terms of "keep an eye on" the issue because the size may not be the same.
