I've seen war time photos of Fallschirmjägers wearing Waffen SS Camo smocks, (I think this was in the Cassino, Italy campaign) But I wonder if any photos exist showing Fallschirmjäger helmets with Waffen SS Camo covers? There's a guy on ebay selling replicates for such, but I wonder if any evidence exists of this actually happening. I'm aware of the standard airborne issued covers, but I am always in search of the weird and unusual to paint up. Thanks |

I believe there were a few paratroopers in the SS, were there not? |

There were indeed SS Fallschirmjager. However, all the evidence seems to point to them wearing Luftwaffe pattern uniform items when dressed as paras despite previous belief that there were SS patterned items. I have also seen combinations of SS uniforms with para helmets but not with SS pattern covers. Therefore it seems unlikely that there were para helmet covers in SS patterns. This does not mean to say that standard SS pattern helmet covers were utilised in the relevant units and as the War wound down in 1945, who knows what was being worn by who. |

Herman Goering Panzer Division wore SS Camo smocks in Italy and helmet covers also. |

But I believe the Herman Goring division's panzergrenadiers wore the regular helmet, not the Falschirmjager one, did they not? |

Mserafin is correct. The Herman Goring boys were panzer troops not paras. Their kit was conventional with SS camo smocks and helmet covers. |

A standard SS helmet cover won't fit an FJ helmet, they are different shapes. So unlike the Heer helmet covers which use a drawstring, the SS ones have little clips which stretch the cover over the helmet. I suppose you could drape it over and tie a bit of string around it. There are many fantasy items sold as reenactment reproductions however, particularly when it comes to 'elite' gear, just like every tatty old bit of DPM sold on eBay was apparently worn by the SAS in the Falklands. |

Lots of interesting unissued kit there as I understand it. The contemporary photos all seem to show splinter pattern camouflage smocks on SS troopers but no helmet covers. Ultimately, the end of the War was so confusing that you might get away with SS paras in full SS pattern camouflage in the last couple of months. |
