Propaganda has been around wars for a long time now – and can be very effective

I have a few favorites – what are yours?
PLEASE AVOID POSTERS IN POOR TASTE

When it comes to propaganda, which often seeks to dehumanise the enemy, what is meant by "poor taste"?

My understanding is that it's OK for imperial propaganda to demonize the enemy in 40K because they are actually demons.

BillyNM@ there is a poster from the Spanish civil war showing a photo of a dead child, with bomber planes in the background, with the line "If you tolerate this your children will be next". I wouldn't post that image here because I feel like dead children is poor taste.

At the risk of being provincial there is this one

I've always enjoyed this one……..it is the best propaganda!
Translates to something like "They are all giving up because the new spring beer has arrived!"

If the link doesn't work, Norman Rockwell, "To Make Men Free."

Still the tops:

Second is this, of course:

Herky – Barter Books ! Not been there for far too long. I bought an original copy of 1937 Infantry Training Manual there and they had loads of copies on the shelves. It might have come from the same box as the poster !

Cerdic25 Sep 2024 9:23 a.m. PST

Parzival – a great poster but can't be "the tops" as it is, when all is said and done, still a knock off of the Kitchener original! (See the link in the OFM's post)

I vote for Prince Rupert's one.

Got to be the. Kitchener pointed finger – so good it was copied, so memorable it is still parodied more than a century later

The Kitchener one inspired so many

Churchill

picture

On the Wiki page at the bottom there are many other nations posters that used Kitchener for inspiration including Smokey the Bear link

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP26 Sep 2024 10:37 a.m. PST

I always assumed this one got regularly added to:

picture

with:

and don't hurry back

or

don't worry we'll be just fine without you

or

Could you get milk on the way back?

etc etc etc

The slightly more subtle

picture

"Yup, and if you were in the navy I'd definitely join"

And then the basic guilt trip:

Since propaganda can be defined as 'information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.' it is surely debatable whether some of the posters linked above that simply encourage people to join their country's armed forces qualify as propaganda.
