So, I need hitchin' posts and tied saddled horses. A hitching post is easy. But where can I get saddled horses, without having to buy mounted cowboys and throwing out the … cowboys? |

Peter Pig makes them in 15mm. You're probably looking for 28mm? |

"buy mounted cowboys and throwing out the … cowboys?" Just convert the cowboys to dead cowboys! Not all can be converted, most should be. |
John the OFM | 20 Sep 2024 5:28 p.m. PST |
The problem with mounted cowboys is that most of the figures I have seen had horses in Hollywood poses. I want them standing, hitched to the hitching post. The horse holder figure suggestions look good. In the song, they were tied out back. May I suggest that Marty thought the song lyrics scanned better that way? 😄 I chose the title of this thread, by the way as a tribute to what I consider one of the very best Country Western songs of all time. Every line is beautifully poetic. "Shocked by the foul evil thing I had done!" My cantina, by the way, is from Thingsfromthebasement, "2 Adobe buildings". |

John, are you familiar with Robbins' San Angelo? Another game possibility: North of the border of Old Mexico I rode one day to the cowtown of San Angelo A hot sun was glowing, a hot breeze was blowing Still not as warm as the lips that I waited to kiss She sent a message a long time ago Secora had promised to meet me in San Angelo I was aware of the chance I was taking I was an outlaw but great was my love for this girl I must be with her I can't stay away Nights spent without her are lonely and so are the days If it means death then I'll have to chance it Only a few minutes more and she'll be at my side At ten o' clock in the morning I tied my horse and I started to walk down the street Where was Secora, had she forgotten This was the day and the hour that she wanted to meet But something is wrong with our plans and I fear death awaits me Here on this hot dusty street Up on a housetop but still I can see There hides a man with a rifle, it's pointed at me I might escape from the man with a rifle But there are others just like him that I cannot see Back of each window the click of a gun Die if I stay and my love for her won't let me run Where is Secora, will my eyes see her Then in a moment she runs from a door down the street "Up on your horse", she is crying "Ride out of town it's a trap and they're waiting for you" But if I ride out, she must ride with me Then in a moment I know that our chances are gone For a bullet is well on its way and it finds my Secora She cries as she falls in my arms Over and over her soft lips did say "Now we're together, I won't let them take you away" One little sigh, her little lips tremble Then it was over, Secora had drifted away Tears dim my vision but plainly I see The ranger that killed her is standing there waiting for me I rise to meet him, my one thought is beat him He deserves death and I swear that this ranger will die I beat his draw and I shot him Shot him six times just as fast as the bullets could fly My gun is empty or more I would shoot him Now there are others just like him that want me to die Their bullets are coming my way, how they hurt when they hit me The pain makes me fall to the ground Gone is my strength, just the will left to fight I hear the sound of the lead as it robs me of life If I must die, let me find Secora Let me hold on to her hand for the few moments left Blindly I search and it isn't in vain I touch the soft velvet hand and it eases the pain Life is no more but we're together Even in death she's my lover, it's over, goodbye |

Is this to be a solo game? object to get the dying kiss? No. But, sort of. Maybe? I said previously that it will be a challenge. Usually 6 friends show up. Marty will show up in the Badlands of New Mexico end of the 9x5 table. El Paso is in the "civilized" part of the table. Murphy might object to the "civilized" description. 😄 It will be like an Olympic Hammer Throw event. Marty sets out. Each other player will be a "mounted cowboy". They have a 1% shot. I have a ton of obstructing terrain. 24" rifle range, 6"'pistol range. Marty gets a saving throw, as in the song. After each Marty dies, I measure how close he comes to Rose's Cantina. (Which is 80% assembled now. It sucks to drop window frame pieces on a concrete floor…) Felina will be the marker for the measurement. How can I leave her out??? Everyone gets a turn as Marty. Chili will be served. Songs will be sung. Get me a beer and you can have another turn as Marty. Naturally, TSATF movement dice will be used. I see no need to adapt Empire or Tractics complexity. I went into Gerrity's Supermarket in Forty Fort last week. El Paso was playing. I joined in and took it as a Sign. |

Gunfighter Ballads is full of scenario ideas. Hank Williams, Asleep at the Wheel, Riders in the Sky… Add many others. Ranger Doug is my Hero. Long Black Veil is, sadly, not set up for a game. But I'm a sucker for Appalachian Murder Ballads. Tom Dooley (Dula) would make a fine rpg. |

John the OFM | 21 Sep 2024 9:31 a.m. PST |
FYI. The Felina figure from the Brigade Ganes Mariachi band set is dancing, balanced on a very small base. Flames of War small base to the rescue. I will probably have the GM move her 3-4" per turn towards Marty as soon as he can be seen from Rose's. If Marty comes to his senses and declares "No broad is worth this much trouble!" and heads instead for Denver or San Diego, he will of course survive but lose all respect. Steal a different horse. |

It's called "situational awareness". Perhaps you should fit Lynyrd Skynyrd in. YouTube link Not cowardice. He's big and has a gun. Plus, I just met her! Incompatible star sign. Reasons. "Would I be the AH if I ran from a gun?" Marty was shocked by the foul evil deed he had done, and sought redemption. Was he seeking justice? Upon himself? Jimmy B had come to realize the depths of his folly. "…nothing to show but this big old tattoo. It's a real beauty. A Mexican cutie. (Felina, perhaps?) how it got there I haven't a clue." The first step is being aware of yourself. |
John the OFM | 22 Sep 2024 11:24 a.m. PST |
Seven Spanish Angels Pancho and Lefty They would make fine RPGs or maybe a Gloire scenario. But not an "escape from Isandhlawana" type game, like "El Paso". Have you ever seen "The Road to Perdition"? I see it as Tom Hanks saving his son's soul from the sin of murder by taking it upon himself, knowing he is damned anyway. I also see his redemption in that act. (Jude Law needed killing anyway.) |

Yes, that is the funniest line in a hilarious song. and R to P, yes and yes. I bought a hitching post with maybe a horse that was plastic/resin, from whatever line the hobby shops have for D&D etc. BIG 28mm. I think. But sounds like you are fixed. And I agree about self-awareness: Oh wa some power the giftie give us, to see ourselves as others see us" or something like that: Robbie Burns, iirc, On Seeing a Louse on a Lady's Hat at Church. |

Since you are a MR fan, you may enjoy this story. In the Young Reader's Edition of LAND OF HOPE, Teachers Guide (TG) and Student Workbook (WB), we included a fair number of song lyrics as primary documents -- with links to performances on Youtube. The chapter on slavery has a number of the spirituals or "sorrow songs" as DuBois called them -- with some of his commentary. The chapter on the westward movement includes Shenandoah (of course) and Sweet Betsy From Pike, etc. They even let me do a contrast of Dixie and Battle Hymn. Railroad songs. Etc. So of course we included Hunters of Kentucky in the chapter on Jackson, but agreed reluctantly that we'd best omit the verse about "girls of every hue, it seems, from snowy white to sooty." But it does have the half horse and half alligator. With contemporary illustration Then we suggested teachers assign a drawing of what that looked like --the old one has horse on top, but I'd think you'd want the reverse -- Posleen! --and we also included MR's Battle of New Orleans as as modern version and invited drawings of "fill this head with cannonballs and powdered his behind. So apparently middle schoolers are okay with exploding gators and monsters but not with "left us all the booty." |

In Doonsbury, one of Clinton Caucus's ancestors was telling his slave, "Why don't you sing one of those songs you sing when you're feeling sorry for yourself? You know. The Blues!" Best version of Shenandoah: YouTube link It sounds very close to what the original would be. But that's a scholarly rabbit hole. I just enjoy. |

I usually prefer the original version of a song, as performed by the writer. "Jimmy Driftwood", a high school history teacher, wrote it for his students. He's an interesting person. He made his own guitar and is a fascinating YouTube rabbit hole. YouTube link |

Jimmy Driftwood also wrote "Tennessee Stud". A fantastic Doc Watson song, that has similar gaming possibilities. He whipped Comanche, Spanish, gamblers and her brothers and Pa. I first heard it on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle be Unbroken", a seminal album. A prized possession. YouTube link |

Sounds as though the game could be adapted for "The Highwayman." You'd need an English coaching inn, of course, but since "the redcoat troops came marching" the only horse you'd need would be at full gallop with the Highwayman riding. And that takes me back about 60 years. "Bess, the landlord's daughter." |
John the OFM | 24 Sep 2024 3:42 p.m. PST |
I'm sure you could get such an inn from either Thingsfromthebasement or Sarissa. Who doesn't have Redcoats on skirmish bases, or a dashing Highwayman? 🙄 Well, since I do, I assume that everyone should! Poem by Alfred, Lord Noyes. Poet Laureate. One of the most beautiful heartbreaking songs ever; and one of the most beautifully sung too. link I suppose one could also game Dennis Moore and his Lupins. I actually did game "Rescue Roddy McCorley" years ago. 1798? Pshaw. I used 1745 British Marines. Use what you have! |
