Hungary did not exist as an independent entity in the mid-C18th. Following the re-conquest of the Danube lands under Ottoman rule for 200 years, Hungary had been reduced in a effect to a backward, run-down province of the Habsburgs , whose monarch ruled as nominal 'King of Hungary.' The Catholic Austrians discriminated against the Protestant majority in Hungary and this may also have encouraged outward immigration. The presence of Hungarians in America ca. 1776 may have been more as soldiers of fortune than republican sympathisers "standing out" of the cause of liberty- Kovats seems to served as a hussar in both the French and Prussian armies- though individuals may have had no great love for autocracy. |
