At least Bazaine had the situation pegged – "Nous marchons a un disastre." |

Hard to find a good one early on. I have often wondered if things would have been different if Chanzy was there in time to command some of the Imperial forces. Saber6 is right on the money. Bazaine has to be one of the worst generals of all time. |

His record in Mexico wasn't too bad. |

This question is like – what is your favourite Madonna movie – the answer is none, because they are all bad. |

Chanzy is the man, no doubt. I have some sympathy for Bazaine. It's bad enough to be promoted beyond your competence and out of your comfort zone at any time. To have it happen so abruptly and in such a dire situation already, and with others more senior than you having already declined the doubtful privilege, is doubly (triply? quadruply?) unfortunate. |

"We are in a chamber pot and about to be shat upon." – General Auguste-Alexandre Ducrot at the battle of Sedan, 1870. Ouch! Cruel but fair . . . |

Faidherbe but just because I followed his career in Senegal so closely. |
