I've got to admit, a squad of mounted Coast Guardsmen at the charge would be a fun to field!

Let's see, now. They used standard US Army horse gear, and I think somebody makes WWII US cavalry for use in the Philippines. So, the horses can be had. Armed sailors are available from some Pulp figure lines. Saw off the legs, put the lower legs in the stirrups, and sculpt thighs with green stuff, and I think you would be in business. It looks like you might do head swaps, replacing the Dixie cup hats with standard US helmets, to add some variety. A lot of work, yes, but it looks like a 10- or 12-man squad would a reasonable sized force, so it isn't like you would need to fill a large table with hundreds of charging Coast Guardsmen.

Hmmmm . . .

Way too much work just to make them using what you suggested.

Thanks. You'll also find, if you're interested, a more detailed account in Wilkinson's 1st tome on the battle of the Atlantic.

Have to admit I only think of the US Coast Guard manning landing craft on D-Day, but always imagined a role watching out for U Boats and infiltrators. What an interesting article. Summat different after all and i think Grelber's idea is a great one
